How does your company rank in AI search? Honest answer: No one knows

Services selling AI ranking reports are lying. Not necessarily intentionally, but they promise something they cannot deliver. Here is why, and what you should measure instead to find out if you are visible in AI searches.

Why AI ranking cannot be measured

Traditional SEO ranking is deterministic. You search for a keyword, Google returns the same ten results (roughly) to everyone who searches. It is measurable. It is reportable.

AI search does not work like that. Every answer is generative, meaning it is uniquely created for that specific question, by that specific user, in that specific context. Ask the same question in ChatGPT twice and you get two different answers. Change the user, change the AI service, change one word in the question. A new answer every time.

Add to this that millions of AI agents are searching for information around the clock using their own prompt formulations, and that every user’s search history and behavior influences what they see. There is literally no "number one spot" to measure.

What you should measure instead

Focus on what is actually measurable and relevant. Start by looking at your website traffic. Have AI services visited your site? Which pages are they landing on? Which pages are they ignoring? This is inbound AI traffic, and it is data you already have in Google Search Console and Analytics.

In addition, ask your incoming leads how they found your company. It is old-fashioned follow-up, but it gives you a truer picture of the impact than any automated report ever could.

The real problem isn't visibility

If you appear in AI answers but no one reaches out, the problem is not about visibility. The problem is that what is being quoted about your company isn't convincing enough. Not clear enough. Not attractive enough.

It is a content problem, not a ranking problem. And content problems are exactly what The Rockit Lab solves.
